UBAGABI

★ Japan ★ Spirit

The Ubagabi (literally “Old Woman Fire”) is a vengeful atmospheric ghost. It belongs to the Kaibi (Strange Fire) category of Yōkai. Unlike a standard ghost, the Ubagabi manifests as a flying ball of flame with the distorted, cackling face of an elderly woman. The legend originates from a specific act of sacrilege: an old woman stole oil from the sacred lamps of Hiraoka Shrine. In the Edo period, lamp oil was a precious commodity, and stealing from a deity was a capital spiritual crime. Upon her death, her soul was unable to move on, transformed into a ball of fire that must fly through the night for eternity.

It is said that the Ubagabi flies with such immense speed—covering miles in the blink of an eye—that the wind it creates sounds like a screaming woman. Encountering one is not just a terrifying visual experience; it is a physical assault, as the spirit is known to brush against the faces of travelers, leaving behind a lingering smell of burnt oil and a sense of impending doom.

Origin & History

In the past, within the confines of Osaka, resided an elderly woman burdened by poverty. Resorting to pilfering oil from the lamps at Hiraoka shrine as a means of survival, she found herself engaged in a heinous transgression, given the scarcity and value of oil during that era. The temple's clergy eventually apprehended her, bringing her misdeed to light. Subsequent to this exposure, her fellow villagers subjected her to ostracism and the reproachful designation of an oil thief. The weight of her humiliation drove her to the pond situated behind the shrine, where she chose to take her own life. Such tainted demises rarely culminate well, and instead of a conventional passing, she underwent a transformation into a yokai. Even today, local residents identify the pond adjacent to Hiraoka shrine as "Ubagabi-ike," a tribute to the yokai born from the old woman's overwhelming shame.

Powers & Abilities

  • Supernatural Velocity: The Ubagabi is one of the fastest Yōkai; it is said to be able to fly from the mountains of Kawachi to the heart of Kyoto in a matter of minutes.
  • Ill Omens: Seeing an Ubagabi is a sign of certain death or great misfortune within three years. It is a "curse of sight."
  • Oil Scent: It can manifest a heavy, choking scent of rancid lamp oil, which it uses to disorient travelers on dark mountain paths.
  • Intangibility: Like most Kaibi, it cannot be struck by swords or physical weapons, as they simply pass through the flame.

Appearance

  • The Orb: It primarily appears as a hovering, flickering sphere of fire, typically around one foot (30 cm) in diameter. The flames often take on an eerie bluish or yellowish-white tint.
  • The Face: Within the center of the swirling flames, the translucent, wrinkled face of an old woman is visible. Her expression is often one of agonizing pain or malicious laughter, with a wide, toothless mouth.
  • The Trail: As it streaks through the air, it leaves a long, shimmering tail of sparks and smoke, resembling a miniature comet or a fireball.
  • The Sound: Though a visual ghost, it is accompanied by a distinct "whirring" or "whooshing" sound of rushing wind, often punctuated by a faint, ghostly cackle that seems to come from the flames themselves.
  • The Contact: Those hit by the fireball describe the "face" as feeling like cold, wet silk rather than actual heat, despite its fiery appearance.
