SKINWALKER

★ North America ★ Hybrid

Deep within the Navajo (Diné) traditions of the American Southwest, the Skinwalker (or Yee Naaldlooshii) exists as one of the most feared and misunderstood figures in North American folklore. Unlike the Wendigo, which is a spirit born of environmental desperation, the Skinwalker is a human—specifically a powerful witch—who has chosen to corrupt sacred medicine for personal gain and malevolence. To become a Skinwalker, an individual must commit an unthinkable act of betrayal against their own kin, effectively severing their ties to humanity to gain the power of the “Forbidden Way.”

They are shape-shifters of the highest order, capable of wearing the skins of animals to steal their speed, strength, and senses. They are not merely “monsters” that hunt for food; they are practitioners of spiritual warfare who use fear, sickness, and psychological terror to control or destroy their victims.

Origin & History

The origin of the Skinwalker is intertwined with the Navajo people's mythology, particularly within the realm of witchcraft and forbidden practices. The transformation into a Skinwalker is said to involve breaking profound cultural taboos, resulting in a descent into darkness. These individuals embrace malevolence, seeking power and influence through unspeakable acts. The Skinwalker's transformation is fueled by a macabre alchemy that blurs the lines between humanity and the supernatural.

Powers & Abilities

  • Skin-Shifting: The ability to take the form of any animal whose skin they possess, gaining its physical traits while retaining human intelligence.
  • Mind Control: They can lock eyes with a victim to paralyze them with fear or "steal" their voice, making it impossible for the victim to call for help.
  • Supernatural Speed: In animal form, they are said to be able to keep pace with a car traveling at highway speeds without tiring.
  • Corrosive Magic: They utilize "corpse powder" (made from ground bone) to inflict mysterious illnesses or curses upon those they target.

Appearance

  • The Human Form: By day, they are indistinguishable from any other person, though they are often said to have a "hollow" or "unblinking" look in their eyes. They rarely make direct eye contact, as their power is often transmitted through the gaze.
  • The Animal Form: They most commonly transform into coyotes, wolves, owls, or crows. However, these animals look "wrong"—they may be unnaturally large, move with human-like gaits, or possess human-looking eyes rather than animal ones.
  • The "Skin": The transformation is tied to the physical hide of the animal. A Skinwalker is often seen draped in a pelt that looks poorly fitted, as if the human body is awkwardly stretching the animal's skin from the inside.
  • The "Half-Shift": Witnesses often describe a blurred state—a creature that runs on all fours like a dog but has the joints and muscle structure of a man, or a wolf that stands upright with elongated, claw-like fingers.
