EMPUSA

★ Greece ★ Humanoid

Empusa is often described as a shape-shifting, demonic or supernatural entity associated with seduction and deception. Empusa was believed to have the ability to change its appearance, often taking on the form of a beautiful woman to lure and deceive unsuspecting individuals. Empusa was notorious for using its beauty and charm to seduce and deceive mortals. It would attract individuals with the intention of causing harm or terror.

She is a  high-ranking servant of Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft and the night.

The Empusa is often considered a precursor to the modern vampire. She was sent by Hecate to scare travelers or feast on their blood and flesh. Unlike the Sirens, who lure you with knowledge, or the Gorgons, who turn you to stone, the Empusa lures you with seduction and then consumes you.

Origin & History

Empusa is sometimes described as the daughter of Hecate, the goddess of magic, witchcraft, and the night. Hecate was a powerful and enigmatic figure in Greek mythology, and her association with Empusa may explain the creature's supernatural and nocturnal characteristics.

References to Empusa can be found in various ancient Greek texts, including works by authors such as Aristophanes and Philostratus.

The Empusa is part of a dark trinity of Greek female monsters, alongside the Lamia and the Mormo.

The Daughter of Hecate: As a servant of the Queen of Witches, she is often sent to guard sacred crossroads or to harass those who wander too close to the entrances of the Underworld.

The Seductive Trap: Folklore warns that she frequently disguises herself as a beautiful maiden to lure young men into a secluded spot. Once the victim is entranced, she transforms into a nightmare and devours them.

The Aristophanes Comedy: While she was a figure of genuine terror, she was also used as a comedic device to highlight the cowardice of certain gods, showing that even the divine feared her erratic shifting.

Powers & Abilities

  • Shapeshifting: She is a master of disguise, able to transform into a beautiful woman, a dog, or a simple farm animal to get close to her prey.
  • Hemorrhaging Bite: She feasts on the blood of her victims, specifically targeting young men while they sleep.
  • Terror Aura: Even in human form, she emits an unsettling "wrongness" that causes dogs to bark and humans to feel a deep, primal dread.
  • Command of Shadows: As a servant of Hecate, she can vanish into darkness or travel through the "in-between" spaces of crossroads.

Appearance

  • The Flaming Hair: Her head is often crowned with a halo of living fire.
  • The Mismatched Legs: This is her most iconic and bizarre trait. One leg is made of bronze, and the other is the leg of a donkey (or sometimes a cow).
  • The Shifter’s Face: She can take the form of a stunningly beautiful maiden to trick men into letting their guard down.
