AMANOJAKU

★ Japan ★ Spirit

The Amanojaku is a mythical creature in Japanese folklore, often categorized as a yokai. The term “Amanojaku” can be translated as “heavenly evil spirit” or “perversity.” Unlike some yokai that are more widely known, the Amanojaku doesn’t have a fixed, specific appearance, and its portrayal can vary in different stories. The Amanojaku is often characterized by its perverse or contrary nature. According to folklore, this creature takes pleasure in contradicting or opposing human intentions and desires. It is said to have the ability to incite people to act against their better judgment or to do things they wouldn’t ordinarily do.

Origin & History

The term "Amanojaku" itself is derived from the elements "Amano" (heavenly) and "jaku" (evil spirit or wickedness). The combination suggests a supernatural being with a perverse or contrary nature that opposes the heavenly or virtuous order. As with many yokai, the Amanojaku's stories have been passed down through generations, evolving over time as they are shared in various regions of Japan.

The "Urimahime" Tale
This is the most famous—and grimmest—Amanojaku story. A girl born from a melon (Urimahime) is warned never to open the door while her parents are out. The Amanojaku tricks her into opening it, kills her, and takes her place. It is only discovered when a local bird sings a song revealing the truth, leading the parents to realize the "girl" in their house is actually the demon in disguise.

Powers & Abilities

  • Desire Reflection: It can read minds, but only to understand what a person wants so it can force them to do the opposite. If you want to go left, it will trick you into going right.
  • Master of Disguise: It is a terrifyingly good shapeshifter. In its most famous (and dark) legend, an Amanojaku kills a young woman named Urimahime, flays her, and wears her skin as a suit to trick her parents.
  • Provocation: It has a supernatural ability to incite arguments. It can make two best friends start a fight over nothing just by whispering the "wrong" things to both of them.
  • Mimicry: It can perfectly imitate voices and sounds to lead people into traps or confusion

Appearance

  • The Mini-Oni: It usually looks like a very small, stunted oni (ogre).
  • The Features: It often has tiny horns, sharp claws, and a mischievous, wide-grinning face.
  • The Size: It is rarely larger than a human child, making it easy for it to hide in the shadows of a home or under floorboards.
