BATSQUATCH

★ North America ★ Hybrid

Deep within the volatile, ash-choked forests of Mount St. Helens, Washington, USA, lurks the Batsquatch. This is a localized cryptid  that appeared only after the massive 1980 eruption. It is not a generalized Sasquatch variant; it is a creature that seems to have been either awakened, transformed, or introduced by the volcano’s extreme conditions, acting as a dynamic and unnerving guardian of the devastation zone.

It is defined not by classic Bigoot evasion or quiet observations, but by bold, aerial non-compliance. It is famously aggressive toward intruders, particularly those operating machinery or vehicles. Its legendary acts are less about direct predation and more about screeching, swooping harassments and the sabotage of industrial operations.

Origin & History

The origin of the Batsquatch legend is deeply rooted in the folklore and oral traditions of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, particularly around Mount St. Helens in Washington State. The eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, which resulted in widespread devastation and environmental changes in the region, also contributed to the mystique surrounding the Batsquatch legend. Some accounts suggest that sightings of the creature increased in the aftermath of the eruption, further fueling interest and speculation about its existence.

In April 1994, a man named Butch Whittaker was driving near the mountain and managed to take several photos of a "large, winged creature" flying near the peaks. While the photos are debated, the description of a "flying purple-blue ape" became the blueprint for the Batsquatch legend.

Powers & Abilities

  • Supersonic Flight: Despite its massive bulk, it can take off vertically and fly at speeds that outpace most forest birds.
  • Sonic Disturbance (Aggressive): Before an attack, it emits an agonizing, multi-pitched, supersonic screech that is localized. This sound doesn't just disorient; it can generate a small, localized vibration that can interfere with sensitive electronic equipment, causing engine failure or tool malfunction.
  • Aerial Ambush: It is known to drop from high ledges or tree canopies, using its weight and claws to pin prey before they even hear it coming.
  • Extreme Durability: Legend says it lived inside or near the crater of Mount St. Helens during the eruption, suggesting it can withstand extreme heat and volcanic ash that would kill any other animal.

Appearance

  • Hybrid Features: The Batsquatch is often depicted as a hybrid creature, combining the physical attributes of a bat and a sasquatch (Bigfoot).
  • Wings: One of the most notable features of the Batsquatch is its large, bat-like wings that enable it to fly.
  • Fur or Hair: The Batsquatch is said to be covered in fur or hair, resembling the dense fur of a sasquatch. The coloration of its fur may vary.
  • Facial Features: The Batsquatch is believed to have facial features resembling both bats and sasquatches. This may include large, reflective eyes, pointed ears resembling those of a bat, and a broad, flat nose similar to that of a sasquatch.
