STAR PEOPLE

★ North America ★ Celestial

The Star People are celestial beings common to the cosmology of the Lakota, Cree, Ojibwe, and Hopi. Unlike physical monsters, they are “beings of light” who represent the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. They are often viewed as the original ancestors of humanity or divine messengers who descend to Earth during times of great change or need.

Origin & History

The origin of the Star People, lies deeply embedded in the mythology and oral traditions of the Lakota, Cree, Ojibwe, and Hopi tribes. The Star People are believed to have originated as spiritual beings or celestial entities associated with the natural phenomena observed in the night sky, particularly the colorful displays of the Aurora Borealis.

In Ojibwe cosmology, the Northern Lights are often considered a manifestation of the spirits of ancestors or supernatural beings dancing or communicating with the living. The stories and beliefs surrounding the Star People, have been passed down through generations via oral tradition, with each telling adding layers of meaning and symbolism to their origin and significance. They are regarded as messengers from the spirit world, offering guidance, protection, and wisdom to those who seek their counsel.

The most common story involves a Star Person falling in love with a human or seeing the suffering of the world. They descend to teach humans how to farm, how to use "Medicine," or how to perform sacred ceremonies (like the Sun Dance). Once their task is done, they return to the sky, leaving behind a "star-stone" or a sacred object to remember them by.

Powers & Abilities

  • Cosmic Wisdom: They possess "all-time" knowledge, seeing the past, present, and future simultaneously. They provide prophecies and guidance through dreams.
  • Celestial Navigation: They can travel across the universe in the "blink of an eye," using the "Hole in the Sky" (the Pleiades) as a portal between dimensions.
  • Healing Light: Their presence is said to heal physical and spiritual sickness. They "re-align" a person's spirit with the harmony of the universe.
  • Elemental Control: As beings associated with the Aurora and the Stars, they are said to influence the weather, particularly the coming of winter and the clarity of the night sky.
  • Manifestation: They can take the form of animals (like the Eagle or the White Buffalo) to deliver specific messages to tribes.

Appearance

  • Because they are made of light and spirit, their form is often fluid:
  • The Radiance: They are typically seen as tall, shimmering figures composed of "starlight" or soft, white-blue energy.
  • The "Grey" Look: In some modern oral traditions (and often linked to the Hopi Ant People), they are described as having large, dark, liquid eyes and slender, graceful bodies.
  • The Aurora Form: To the Ojibwe and Inuit, they appear as the Northern Lights, manifesting as shifting ribbons of green, pink, and violet light as they "dance" across the sky.
  • The Human Mask: When they walk among humans, they are said to appear as exceptionally beautiful or wise elders, often identifiable only by the "sparkle" in their eyes.
