★ Overview
EACH-UISGE
The Each-Uisge (pronounced eck-oosh-kyeh, literally “Water Horse”) is the most dangerous shapeshifter in Gaelic mythology. While the Kelpie haunts rivers and is often just mischievous, the Each-Uisge is a relentless predator of the still waters and the salty coast.
It is a monster that preys on the basic human desire for companionship and convenience. It appears as a magnificent horse, waiting by the shore for a tired traveler to mount it. However, the moment the rider touches its skin, they are doomed. It is a creature of “Adhesive Death”—once you touch it, you are physically bonded to its hide, and it will plunge into the deepest part of the loch to devour everything but your liver, which it leaves floating to the surface as a grim signature of its kill.
In its man-form, it can only be recognized by the tell-tale presence of water weeds or sand in its hair.
Origin & History
The Each-uisge shares similarities with other water horse myths found in various cultures around the world, reflecting the universal themes of danger associated with bodies of water. Water horses, including the Each-uisge, often serve as cautionary figures warning against approaching unknown horses or strangers near lakes, rivers, or other aquatic environments.
Powers & Abilities
- Shape-Shifting: Like many water horses in folklore, the Each-uisge has the ability to shape-shift. It can transform between the appearance of a beautiful horse and that of a handsome human.
- Attractiveness: In both its horse and humanoid forms, the Each-uisge is described as exceptionally attractive and alluring.
- Strength: The Each-uisge is often depicted as a strong and powerful creature, particularly in its horse form.
- Inescapable Adhesion: Its skin acts as a "molecular glue." Once a rider is seated or a hand is placed on its flank, the victim is physically fused to the creature.
Appearance
- The Majestic Stallion: Most often seen as an exquisitely beautiful horse, frequently a sleek black or a shimmering grey. It looks like the finest steed a human could ever hope to own.
- The Adhesive Hide: To the touch, its coat feels like velvet, but it is coated in a supernatural, glue-like secretion. Once flesh touches this hide, it is impossible to pull away.
- The Human Glamour: It can shapeshift into a handsome young man to lure women, or occasionally a giant bird. Even in human form, it is betrayed by water weeds or sand tangled in its hair.
- The Monstrous Form: Beneath the glamour, it is a sleek, muscular aquatic beast with glowing eyes and a mouth filled with serrated teeth meant for rending flesh.
- The Signature Mane: Its mane is often described as flowing like water or being perpetually wet, regardless of the weather.
