★ Overview
VIRUÑAS
In the folklore of Colombia (and parts of the broader South American Andean region), the Viruñas is a demonic figure deeply rooted in the “Abrahmic-Mestizo” tradition. He is essentially the Colombian personification of the Devil—specifically in his role as a Soul Trader. Unlike a mindless monster, the Viruñas is a sophisticated, legalistic predator who operates through contracts and deals.
He typically targets the desperate, the ambitious, or the lonely, appearing as a figure of high social distinction. He offers to fulfill a person’s greatest desire—wealth, love, or power—but with a terrifying catch: he doesn’t just take the soul of the person he makes a deal with; he often claims the souls of everyone that person holds dear. He is the “Lawful Evil” banker of the underworld, always returning to collect his debt at the moment his victim has the most to lose.
Origin & History
The legends of El Viruñas (often linked with Mandingas or simply "The Evil One") are a fascinating blend of Spanish Catholic morality and local Colombian folklore.
The Origin: The "Devil of the Roads"
The name "Viruñas" is colloquially linked to "the virus," implying something that infects the soul or spreads unseen. However, the character stems from the 18th and 19th-century transition in Colombia, where rural farmers began moving toward towns. He is often associated with the Paisa (Antioquia) and Cundiboyacense (Bogotá/Boyacá) regions, appearing on lonely rural roads or outside taverns where men would gamble their earnings away.
The most common legend tells of a legendary gambler who could never be beaten. One night, a pale stranger in a black hat (El Viruñas) challenges him. The gambler wins hand after hand until the stranger offers a final bet: "Your luck forever, against the souls of your family." The gambler, blinded by greed, accepts and wins again. He becomes the richest man in his village, but one by one, his children and wife wither away from a mysterious "internal coldness." He dies wealthy but utterly alone, realizing the Viruñas didn't just want his soul, but the light of his entire lineage.
