NUE

★ Japan ★ Spirit

The Nue is one of the oldest and most formidable yōkai in Japanese mythology. Often referred to as the “Japanese Chimera,” it is a creature of ill omen and psychological terror. The Nue is a harbinger of sickness and misfortune, famously known for haunting the imperial palace and tormenting the Emperor himself.

It is a creature made of mismatched parts, defying the natural order of the world. Its legendary acts are defined by nocturnal psychological warfare; it doesn’t just attack with claws, but with an eerie, whistling cry and a black smoke that brings physical illness to those who hear or see it.

Origin & History

The origin of the Nue can be traced back to Japanese folklore and literature, with one of its earliest and most notable appearances found in "The Tale of the Heike" (Heike Monogatari), a historical epic from the late 12th century.

The Emperor’s Sickness: In the summer of 1153, Emperor Konoe began having terrible nightmares and fell deathly ill. Every night at 2:00 AM (the Hour of the Ox), a dark, swirling cloud would settle over the palace roof.

The Heroic Archery: The legendary samurai Minamoto no Yorimasa was summoned to deal with the threat. Using a magical bow and an arrow tipped with eagle feathers, he fired into the center of the black cloud. A scream echoed out, and the Nue tumbled from the sky.

The Raft of Disposal: After Yorimasa’s retainer finished the beast off, the citizens of Kyoto were so terrified of a curse that they put the Nue’s body on a boat and sent it floating down the Kamo River to the sea.

Powers & Abilities

  • Sonic Torment: Its cry sounds like a scaly thrush—a high-pitched, lonely whistle that causes deep spiritual unease and physical sickness in humans.
  • Cloud Flight: The Nue can ride on "black clouds," allowing it to travel through the sky and strike from above without touching the ground.
  • Independent Tail: Its serpent tail can strike enemies behind it or spray venom while the main head is occupied.
  • Aura of Misfortune: Its mere presence causes bad luck, crop failure, and illness in the immediate vicinity.

Appearance

  • The Head of a Monkey: Symbolizing cleverness and mimicking human expressions.
  • The Body of a Tanuki (Raccoon Dog): Representing shapeshifting and deceptive weight.
  • The Legs of a Tiger: Providing immense predatory power and speed.
  • The Tail of a Serpent: Its tail is a living, venomous snake that can act independently.
  • The Shroud of Smoke: It is rarely seen clearly, as it perpetually exudes a thick, oily black smoke or mist that conceals its form.
  • The Glowing Eyes: Its eyes shine with a sickly light that can be seen even through the dense fog it creates.
