VALKYRIES

Valkyries

In Norse mythology, Valkyries are female figures associated with the god Odin. Valkyries are noble maidens whose task is to bring the bodies of heroes killed in battle to their final resting place in Valhalla.

In Old Norse, the word “valkyrja,” from which the name “valkyrie” is derived, describes a being who presides over the death of an individual fallen in battle. While caring for the dead is the valkyries’ main role, they are also caretakers of the deceased and occasional lovers of both mortal men and gods.

Other accounts suggest that the Valkyries were originally goddesses of fertility and death, who later evolved into warriors and psychopomps (guides of souls to the afterlife).

In Norse mythology, the Valkyries are associated with the idea of the afterlife, and they are believed to take the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, the great hall of Odin. There, the chosen warriors would be honored and prepared for the final battle of Ragnarok, the end of the world
