KONGAMATO

★ S. Africa ★ Beast

The Kongamato, known as the “boat breaker,”or “overwhelmer of boats,” is a creature resembling a pterodactyl that has reportedly been sighted by both indigenous people and adventurers in the Jiundu swamps of the Mwinilunga district, spanning Western Zambia, Angola, and Congo. Accounts of the Kongamato’s presence have spanned a considerable period, with sightings reported by both African natives and European explorers. Descriptions consistently describe it as a reddish-blackish creature reminiscent of a pterosaur.

Origin & History

Since the 1920s, explorers and naturalists have been stunned by descriptions of the creature, because they perfectly match a Pterosaur (specifically a Pterodactyl), which is supposed to have been extinct for 66 million years.

Powers & Abilities

  • Boat Breaker: Its name comes from its habit of swooping down on small canoes (makoro), capsizing them, and attacking the passengers.
  • Supernatural Dread: It is said that merely looking at a Kongamato can cause death, or at the very least, a long-lasting curse of bad luck.
  • Aquatic Striking: Like a kingfisher on steroids, it can dive from great heights into the water to snatch large fish or humans.
  • Territorial Screech: It emits a metallic, clicking sound that echoes through the swamps, signaling that it has claimed a specific stretch of river.

Appearance

  • The Wings: It has a massive wingspan (4 to 7 feet) made of leathery, hairless skin rather than feathers.
  • The Snout: A long, beak-like mouth filled with sharp, interlocking teeth (unlike modern birds).
  • The Color: Usually described as bright red or a dark, muddy brown.
  • The Claws: It has distinct claws at the "elbows" of its wings, which it uses to cling to trees or tear into prey.
