GRASSMAN

★ North America ★ Beast

The Grassman is a mythical creature in American folklore, most commonly associated with Ohio, particularly the Shawnee Forest and the Appalachian region. It is typically described as a large, bipedal, ape-like humanoid similar to Bigfoot or Sasquatch, though with distinct regional traits.

The name “Grassman” comes from its reported habit of building elaborate nest-like structures from tall grass, brush, and wheat. Unlike the Bigfoot legends of the Pacific Northwest, the Grassman is often said to appear near agricultural areas and small towns, earning it a reputation as a more “suburban” cryptid.

One of the most frequently cited pieces of evidence in reported sightings is the presence of large, human-like footprints. These tracks are said to resemble oversized human feet, sometimes measuring up to 17 inches in length.

Origin & History

The exact origins of the Grassman legend are difficult to pinpoint, as tales of mysterious hairy creatures have existed in various forms in folklore around the world for centuries. However, the specific iteration of the Grassman as a cryptid creature is believed to have emerged in the 20th century, with reported sightings and encounters becoming more prevalent during this time.

The legend exploded in 1978 in the Kenmore area of Akron, Ohio. A group of children reported seeing a 7-foot-tall hairy monster in a gravel pit. When police investigated, they found large footprints and "beds" made of pressed-down tall grass, cementing the "Grassman" name in local lore.

Powers & Abilities

  • Nest Building: It is a master architect of the bush. It weaves "huts" or ground nests in high-grass fields that are large enough to house a family.
  • The "Rocks and Knocks": Like Old Yellow Top, it is highly territorial. It communicates or intimidates by "tree knocking" (hitting trunks with logs) or throwing large stones at hikers.
  • The Odor: It is famous for a "skunk-like" or "rotten egg" stench that precedes its arrival.
  • Pack Mentality: Unlike other solo cryptids, Grassman sightings often involve multiple individuals (a "family unit"), suggesting they are more social than their cousins.

Appearance

  • The Build: Massive and stocky, often described as broader in the chest than a standard Bigfoot.
  • The Fur: Usually long, shaggy, and dark brown or black, but often matted with grass and burrs.
  • The Face: Described as more "gorilla-like" than human, with a flat nose and deep-set, glowing eyes (often reported as amber or red).
  • The Hands: Large, powerful, and capable of snapping small trees to weave its nests.
