NATTRAVN

★ Norway ★ Undead

The Nattravn, often referred to as “Night Raven” in English, is a mythical creature from Scandinavian folklore, particularly in Norwegian and Danish traditions.

The Nattravn is the soul of a person who was either suicidal, unbaptized, or a criminal denied burial in consecrated ground. They are cursed to fly from East to West until the Day of Judgment.

The Flight: They only fly at night. It is said that they are constantly trying to fly toward the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, but they never quite make it before the sun rises.

The Holes: They are often described as having holes in their wings. This is a physical manifestation of their “unholy” nature—their wings were said to have been pierced by the stakes used to pin their bodies into the ground to prevent them from rising as undead.

Legend says that as the Nattravn flies, the wind whistling through these holes creates a terrifying, rhythmic sound like rattling bones or a dying man’s whistle. Seeing a Nattravn is a direct omen of death, but even more dangerous is its gaze; if it looks through a window into a house, someone inside is destined to die soon.

Origin & History

The Nattravn is rooted in Christian-era Scandinavian folklore, evolving from earlier concepts of the Valravn (Slaughter Raven).

  • The Excommunicated Soul: The most common origin story is that the Nattravn is the soul of a person who died while excommunicated or who committed suicide. Because they cannot enter Heaven or Hell, they are transformed into this skeletal bird to wander the earth until they can find a way to redeem themselves.

  • The Feast of the Dead: In some traditions, the Nattravn is said to eat the eyes of the dying or the hearts of unbaptized children to gain enough "weight" to finally sink into the grave.

Powers & Abilities

  • The Fatal Glimpse: If you look through the holes in a Nattravn's wings, you will see things no human should see (visions of the underworld or your own death), and you will immediately fall ill or die.
  • The Hearth Curse: If a Nattravn flies over a house and its shadow falls on the chimney, someone in that house will die within the year.
  • The "Greedy" Raven: Unlike normal ravens that scavenge for food, the Nattravn scavenges for souls. It is said to be particularly attracted to the dying, waiting to snatch their spirit before it can reach heaven.
  • Death Omen: Its presence is a psychic anchor for death. If it circles a house, a resident will soon pass away.

Appearance

  • The Skeletal Frame: It is an unnaturally large raven, often appearing more like a skeleton with feathers than a living bird.
  • The Perforated Wings: Its wings are full of holes and tatters. These are not from battle, but are a mark of its spiritual decay.
  • The Bone-Whistle: It does not caw like a normal bird; instead, it emits a high-pitched whistling or rattling sound caused by the air passing through its hollow wings and ribs.
  • The Glowing Embers: Its eyes are often described as burning coals or pinpricks of red light that pierce through the thickest night fog.
