WEREHYENA

★ Beast

In many African cultures, the werehyena “Bouda” is not a cursed victim like the European Werewolf. Instead, it is often believed to be a blacksmith or a potter. Because these craftsmen work with fire and “change” the earth into metal or clay, they are viewed with a mix of awe and suspicion, leading to the legend that they change their shape at night to feast on the living.

Origin & History

In Ethiopia, a longstanding belief persists that every blacksmith, , secretly possesses the ability to transform into a hyena—a wizard or witch-like power. These blacksmith werehyenas are said to engage in nocturnal grave robbing activities and are referred to as "bouda" (also spelled "buda"). This notion engenders a sense of skepticism from the local populace.

The belief in bouda extends to Sudan, Tanzania, and even Morocco, where some Berber communities consider them to be individuals who take on the form of a hyena during the night, only to regain human shape at daybreak. In the folklore of Western Sudanic peoples, an enigmatic hybrid creature emerges—human by day, transformed into a cannibalistic menace by night, particularly feared by lovers. This being often assumes the guise of a highly skilled healer, blacksmith, or woodcutter during its human form, but reveals itself through distinctive traits such as a hairy body, fiery red eyes, and a distinct nasal voice.

Powers & Abilities

  • Mimicry: Their most terrifying trait. They can mimic the voices of loved ones to lure victims out of their homes at night.
  • The "Evil Eye": A Bouda can cast a curse just by looking at someone, causing them to fall ill or waste away so they are easier to "harvest" later.
  • Supernatural Strength: They can crack open a tomb or a locked door with ease using their powerful jaws.
  • Invisibility (Partial): Some legends say they don't physically "change," but rather project an illusion of a hyena over their human body, making them immune to normal weapons.

Appearance

  • The Human Form: Usually an ordinary person, though they are often said to have a "glimmer" in their eyes or a particularly hairy chest and back.
  • The Beast Form: A massive, striped or spotted hyena. However, they are often larger than natural hyenas, with human-like intelligence visible in their gaze.
  • The Voice: Many legends say a Werehyena in animal form retains a human-like voice or wears a distinctive piece of jewelry (like an earring or necklace) that they wore as a person.
