DWARF
Deep within the subterranean halls of Norse and Germanic mythology, the Dwarf (Old Norse: Dvergr) stands as the ultimate artisan of the supernatural world. Unlike the garden-variety lawn ornaments of modern pop culture, the original Dwarves were earthy, complex, and often morally ambiguous beings. Born from the primordial flesh of the giant Ymir, they are the architects of the gods’ greatest treasures, living in the sunless realm of Nidavellir or Svartalfheim.
They are the keepers of The Secret of the Forge. Their presence in myth usually signals a moment of creation or transformation. They are the ones who forged Mjölnir for Thor, Gungnir for Odin, and the golden hair of Sif.
Origin & History
The concept of dwarves transcends cultural boundaries, appearing in myths and legends from various corners of the world. In Norse mythology, they are known as "dvergar," masterful craftsmen who forged powerful artifacts. In Germanic folklore, dwarves were associated with the earth, mining, and metallurgy. Similarly, Greek and Roman mythology featured the "dwarfish" Telchines, renowned for their mastery over the arts and crafts.
According to the Völuspá (the first poem of the Poetic Edda), the universe was created from the dismembered body of the first frost giant, Ymir.
As Ymir’s flesh became the earth, dwarfs "quickened" like maggots in his rotting meat. The gods (Odin, Vili, and Vé) didn't like having mindless maggots crawling through the new world, so they gave these creatures human understanding and human shapes, though they remained small and lived deep within the earth and stones.
The first two dwarfs created were Mótsognir (the mightiest) and Durinn (the second). From them, an entire race was fashioned.
Fun Fact: If you read the Dvergatal (the "Tally of Dwarfs" in the Eddas), you'll find names like Thorinn, Dvalinn, and Gandalfr—the direct inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
